Female genital mutilation (FGM) also known as female genital cutting (FGC) or female genital circumcision is a global phenomenon and a recognized international health problem which is practiced worldwide and cuts across cultural, ethnic, social or religious boundaries. The aim of this research is to determine the prevalence, pattern and determinants of female genital mutilation among women of reproductive age in communities in Imo State, Nigeria. The study was conducted among women of reproductive age in selected communities in Imo State. It is a community based descriptive cross-sectional study. The participants were selected using the multistage sampling technique and data was extracted using a pretested, semi-structured, interviewer administered questionnaire. Data was cleared manually and analyzed using computer software; Special Package for Social Services (SPSS), IBM version 20. The prevalence of FGM/C in the study was 60.0% and majority of them (53.3%) had type II performed on them. Socio-demographic and reproductive health factors found to be significantly associated with the prevalence of FGM/C among the women on bi-variate analysis were; age (p˂0.0001), marital status (p˃0.006) educational status, (p˂0.0001), occupational status (p=0.002), monthly income (p=0.0003), previous sexual exposure (p˂0.0001), pain during sexual intercourse (p˂0.001), ever had an abortion (p˂0.0001), ever had complication during delivery (p˂0.0001), and pain during menstruation (p˂0.0001). Thus, there is need for every state and local government area to domesticate the legislation against this practice and implement it strictly.
