Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases are increasing day by day and it is a pre-dominant health problem these days. Patients undergoing cardiac surgery face significant challenges and experience many physiological and psychological symptoms during the post-operative period. They experience pain, anxiety, stress, muscle tension, variation in blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, cardiac rhythm etc. This pilot study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of dual nursing interventions on anxiety, pain and bio-physiological parameters among patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Forty patients undergoing cardiac surgery who met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to intervention group(n=20) and control groups (n=20). Patients in the intervention group were given pre-operative video assisted teaching program and reflexology for 45 minutes consecutively for three post-operative days whereas control group received only routine care. Anxiety, pain and bio physiological variables were measured at various time points using tools such as Hamilton Anxiety Scale, Numerical Pain Scale and Checklist was used to record bio physiological variables respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the scores of anxiety, pain and a few of the bio physiological parameters in the intervention group. However, there was no discernible difference between the groups in the bulk of the bio physiological variables’ values. Both pre-operative video-assisted teaching program and reflexology were found effective in reducing the anxiety, pain and selected bio physiological parameters of patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
