Cardiovascular diseases are the public health problem of our century. Low and middle incomes countries are more affected by their morbidity and mortality. Our study was a retrospective one that analyzed the time series trends in admissions, discharge, deaths, length of stay, and overall annual mortality in the cardiology department of Idrissa Pouye General Hospital (HOGIP) in Senegal from 107 monthly activity reports. Other specific objectives were addressed such as the quality of care in the department, and current state of universal health coverage in Senegal regarding cardiovascular diseases. The phenomenon of admissions is increasing (Estimate Std. = 19.8; 95% CI = [5.15; 34.37] to poly (time,7)1). The phenomenon of discharge is increasing (Estimate Std. = 18.8 with 95% CI = [5.62; 32.01] to poly (time,7)1). The phenomenon of deaths is not significant over time with 95% CI = [-1.42; 3.31] to poly(time,7)1. The phenomenon of average monthly lengths of stay is decreasing (Estimate Std. = -2.23; 95% CI = -4.16; -0.31] at poly (time,7)1). The overall annual mortality phenomenon is decreasing (Estimate Std. = -1.58; 95% CI = [-2.47; -0.69] at poly(time,7)1).This study provides proof of the growing demand for cardiology care at HOGIP. It also lifts the veil on the good quality of care in the said department according to a clinical efficiency indicator (overall annual mortality) and efficiency (mean monthly length of stay). On the strength of these observations and the our reflection on universal health coverage in Senegal with regard to cardiovascular diseases, we propose some recommendations for the fight against cardiovascular diseases by improving the quality of care and universal health coverage.
