Abstract

The relationship between environment and health is of extreme relevance in Public Health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 23% of all deaths globally are attributable to environmental factors, and several diseases could be avoided if we lived in healthier environments. Given the scarcity of literature on this topic in sub-Saharan Africa and the similarity of the health consequences of living in an environment polluted by industrial activities, we are conducting this study to sound the alarm on the health risks of living around industrial facilities. This was a cross-sectional study from 1 May to 1 July 2019. 423 people, who gave their verbal consent, were interviewed using an anonymous and structured questionnaire. Data were entered and analyzed with Epi info7.2 and SPSS 17.0 software. The subjects interviewed were mainly women ((sex ratio = 0.75H / F), had a median age of 31 years. Lack of school instruction was found in 46.3% of respondents. They lived as a couple in 62.6% of cases. The median length of residence in the area was 5 years. The monthly income was at most 60000FCFA (less than 91.43 euros) in 87.7% of cases. The subjects did not have health insurance in 89.8% of cases. Respondents were not employed in the factory in 97.6% of cases. The factory existed before the development of 73.3% of the subjects in the residential area. The residents interviewed were concerned about the quality of the environment in 91.7% of cases. The subjects were aware of the risk incurred because of their place of habitation in 71.9% of cases. Smoke and bad odours were the most reported nuisances (33.3% and 29.4% of cases.). Breathing difficulties and eye irritation were the consequences of the most reported nuisances in 42.6% and 40.2% of cases respectively. It was concluded that man’s behaviour towards nature poses threats to his health. It is important to take these threats into account when making certain decisions.
